Full Moon and Bugs, Bugs, Bugs... | Fighting Autism and Winning!

Diatomacious Earth (often referred to as "DE") is an off white talc-like powder that is the fossilized remains of marine phytoplankton. When sprinkled on a bug that has an exoskeleton (such as bed bugs, ants or fleas) it gets caught between their little exoskeleton joints. As they move, the diatomaceous earth acts like razor blades and cuts them up. But it doesn't hurt mammals. We can eat it. We do eat it! It's in lots of grain based foods because lots of grains are stored with diatomaceous earth to keep the bugs from eating

It's in lots of grain based foods because lots of grains are stored with diatomaceous earth to keep the bugs from eating the grain!

Die bugs! Die! Die! Die!

I have heard two explanations of how diatomaceous earth works.

diatomaceous earth magnified

One is that on a microscopic level, the diatomaceous earth particles are very sharp looking. These particles stick to an insect and get stuck between its exoskeleton joints. As the insect moves, it gets physically cut up.

The other explanation is that diatomaceous earth sticks to the insect and somehow causes them to dry out. I think this approach involves scratching the insects waxy layer which then allows precious moisture within the insect to get out. So their teeny tiny bug-innards turn into teeny tiny bug-innards-jerky.

A reader, Sue, in Washington state writes:

Both are true and connected. DE is almost pure silica (with some beneficial trace minerals); under a microscope, it looks like shards of glass (glass is made from silica). On any beetle-type insect that has a carapace, like fleas and cockroaches, the DE works under the shell and punctures the body, which then dehydrates and the insect dies. DE is totally nontoxic. There is no buildup of tolerance like there is to poisons because the method of killing is PHYSICAL, not chemical.

bug running from diatomaceous earth

The important thing to us is that if an insect with an exoskeleton gets diatomaceous earth on them, they die. At the same time, we can rub it all over our skin, rub it in our hair, eat it .... whatever ... and we are unharmed.

Diatomaceous earth kills all bugs. It has been reported to be the most effective solution when fighting pests like fleas, ants and bed bugs.

Farmers dump food grade diatomaceous earth by big scoops in with grains when the grains are stored. It kills the insects that want to feast on the grain. This is a great improvement over the stuff they used to put in with the grain.

Farmers feed gobs of diatomaceous earth (food grade) to animals in the hopes that it will cure whatever ails them. Many farmers swear that the stuff kills all sorts of worms in their critters.

Many people eat a quarter cup of food grade diatomaceous earth every day. They mix it into juice. I have visited with several people that are keen on living past 100 years that believe that eating lots diatomaceous earth every day will help them with that goal. I have found references where it is cited for colon cleansing, parasite control and detox.

diatomaceous earth fighting ants on an apple tree

One strange thing about diatomaceous earth is that for it to work on killing bugs, you have to keep it dry. Even morning dew can make diatomaceous earth ineffective.

I have encountered over a dozen ignorant boobs that have proclaimed "Diatomaceous Earth does NOT work!" I have read this statement in all caps. In extra big fonts. With italics. And I've even had it screamed at me. I'm gonna stick with "ignorant boobs". On closer inspection of each case there is always a flaw. Usually the problem is that it was not used correctly. Diatomaceous earth is not a bait. If you put a little bit in a pile somewhere, the bugs are not drawn to it and invite all their friends. I kinda wonder if the pesticide companies pay people to go to internet forums and say this sort of thing. Diatomaceous earth is super cheap, non toxic, and generally more effective than anything the pesticide companies have to offer - so it kinda cuts into their profit margins a bit. I've been meaning to create an experiment to set the record straight on this topic, but a participant in the diatomaceous earth discussion, Stephanie, beat me to it:

I tried my own experiment with the diatomaceous earth to see how quickly it kills the fleas; I caught a few fleas and put them in a jar with a pinch of diatomaceous earth - all were dead within just a couple of hours.

It just doesn't get any more clear than that.

How safe is diatomaceous earth?

The only known problem for people, mammals and birds that I have ever been able to find any reference to is breathing it in. For food grade diatomaceous earth, there is only the bother of breathing in any dust. There exists another variety of diatomaceous earth that has been fiddled with so it can be used for pool filters. The pool grade stuff would be bad for you because it contains up to 70% "crystalline silica". My understanding is that if you work with the pool grade stuff all day, every day, for years, you could get cancer. Don't mess with the pool grade stuff. Food grade diatomaceous earth will contain less than 1% crystalline silica.

This article is really about the pure, food grade diatomaceous earth. I have to say "food grade" over and over or some nitwit will quote a small slice and then bring up the pool grade issues.

I have heard from two people that said that they won't use diatomaceous earth anymore because "the tiny particles cut my lungs!" --- (deep sigh goes here) All I can say is "Did you actually examine your lung with a microscope and watch the diatomaceous earth cut into it?" - of course, they did not. I think the truth behind these reports is that these folks heard how diatomaceous earth works, and when they would breathe in the dust, it would make them cough - just as breathing in flour or corn starch would make you cough. And then they thought of the sharpness at a microscopic level. My understanding is that when diatomaceous earth becomes moist, the sharp thing is no longer happening. That's why you have to keep it dry when you use it.

diatomaceous earth and flour

I have heard that people working in the diatomaceous earth (food grade) mines have no greater health problems than the people working in any other mines. (I would like to get some sources for this info - if anybody has a link, please email me)

As long as you are using food grade diatomaceous earth, you are perfectly safe. Even if you breathe in gobs of it. Of course, if you are asthmatic or have lung problems of any kind, I would think breathing in big gobs of any kind of dust would be a bad idea.

gimmie gimmie gimmie!

There are a lot of varieties of diatomaceous earth, so when you are shopping, be sure to get the right stuff!

Make sure that you get food grade diatomaceous earth. Some people make 3% of the food they eat be diatomaceous earth. There are claims at parasite control, longevity and all sorts of perks. I know that food grade diatomaceous earth is used heavily in storing grains - so you are probably already eating lots of diatomaceous earth every time you eat any bread, pasta or other grain based food.

Farmers feed food grade diatomaceous earth to their animals to reduce parasites and provide other benefits.

Some places sell the diatomaceous earth (food grade) mixed with other stuff. And that is something I do not recommend. When I see a label that says "97% diatomaceous earth" I have to wonder what the other 3% is. If the packaging is about killing bugs, is it some sort of toxin? Did they add something like borates or pyrethrin for a little extra kick? I don't want that!

Some places sell diatomaceous earth that is for swimming pool filters - that is definitely what you do NOT want.

Some places sell an 8 ounce shaker. I think it is wise to get at least a few pounds of the stuff. It keeps well (it's already millions of years old) and is useful for so many things. And if you get too little, you are likely to not use enough.

So I've done a lot of research on this .... and I've used diatomaceous earth from about eight different sources ... and here is what I'm recommending: This is food grade diatomateous earth guaranteed to be "less than 0.5% crystaline silica". After a long talk with the guy that runs this outfit, I found out that most of this diatomaceous earth runs about 0.1% to 0.2% crystaline silica. By far the best I've ever heard of.

This next one is food grade diatomaceous earth where all they would tell me is that it has less than 0.5% crystalline silica. Not as good as the stuff above, but still way better than the others I could find:

How Ohio Began To Slip Away From Mitt Romney

With each recent poll, Ohio has begun to look less like a swing state and more like a road map back to the private sector for Mitt Romney.

A series of miscues on important Ohio issues and a successful effort by President Barack Obama's campaign to define the Republican challenger have made Romney's odds look increasingly long in the Rust Belt bellwether. Eight of the 12 public polls conducted after the Democratic National Convention have shown Romney with at least a 4-point deficit and one on Wednesday showed him down by 10. No Republican candidate has ever won the White House without carrying Ohio.

Doug Usher, managing partner of research at the bipartisan polling firm Purple Strategies, said the reasons why Romney has lagged behind start with the automotive industry, which figures so prominently in both the state's economy and the Obama campaign's pitch to Ohio voters.

Democrats there have jumped at the chance to highlight Romney's opposition to the restructuring of the U.S. auto industry, epitomized by his 2008 New York Times op-ed with the now-infamous title, "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt." But those attacks against Romney are of a piece. The Obama campaign has also hammered the former Massachusetts governor's career at the private equity firm Bain Capital, as well as the murky nature of his tax returns. Meanwhile, Romney's surreptitiously recorded remarks made at a swanky fundraiser earlier this year gave substance to the caricature Obama and Democrats have drawn of the Republican nominee.

For a candidate running in a state like Ohio, that amounts to a potential coup de gr?ce.

"You combine the 'let Detroit go bankrupt' quote with the '47 percent' remark and you create a pretty powerful narrative across the country, but especially in Ohio," Usher told TPM.

The PollTracker Average shows Romney has always had trouble gaining traction there, but his deficit has grown even wider as the attacks have begun to stick.

Plenty of critics ? including some Democrats ? cried foul when the Obama team opened the general election campaign with a flurry of criticism toward Romney's time at Bain Capital, the private equity firm he helped found. But there has long been reason to believe that Ohio provided fertile ground for such a strategy. A survey from Purple Strategies in June showed that Bain-centric attacks carry far more potency in Ohio than other battlegrounds. The state's populist champion, Sen. Sherrod Brown (D), urged the Obama campaign to keep bringing the heat to Romney's professional biography, predicting to TPM earlier this summer that drawing attention to layoffs by companies bought out by Bain would strike a chord with Ohio voters.

To gauge the effect of the Obama campaign's focus on Bain, consider Romney's low favorability rating in Ohio. Half of Ohioans currently have an unfavorable view of Romney, according to the PollTracker Average. His favorability rating there has marginally improved since the doldrums of the summer, when Bain scrutiny was arguably at a fever pitch.

Compounding matters for Romney in Ohio, his central campaign message has often been muddled by a prominent in-state surrogate. Republican Gov. John Kasich has frequently touted Ohio's steadily declining unemployment rate, but his rosy outlook undermines the message pushed by Romney, who has tried to parlay economic pessimism into votes. Nationally, Romney has lost his previously consistent edge on the economy over the last month, and Obama has also claimed the upper-hand on the issue in Ohio. Tuesday's poll from the Washington Post showed Ohio voters preferring Obama over Romney to handle the economy, 50 percent to 43 percent.

Matthew Henderson, communications director for the Ohio Republican Party, told TPM that the state's successes underscore the urgency to replace Obama and give Kasich a stronger partnership with the White House.

"Just imagine what we could do with an ally in Washington," Henderson said.

But if Ohio Democrats are brimming with confidence, it may also come from strength in numbers. The Obama campaign boasts 96 offices in the state to the Romney campaign's 36. A low number of undecided voters this year places an even greater emphasis on efforts to get out the vote, which could make a robust field organization an even greater asset. Early voting is slated to begin in Ohio next week.

Seth Bringman, an Ohio-based Democratic consultant, credits the Obama campaign for remaining engaged in the state since 2008, saying the Romney campaign's ground operation "started light-years behind and they have not caught up."

"I don't know what [the Romney campaign's] strategy is, quite frankly," Bringman told TPM. "They made a run at it, but it just seems like their playbook was to rely on super PAC ads while the Democrats knew we had to outwork them on the ground. And we certainly have done that over the past year."

Henderson dismissed the disparity in organizational size, suggesting that some of the Obama camp's offices are merely for show.

"If you drive past a lot of their headquarters, the lights are off. They're just there to have a presence," Henderson told TPM. "Our folks on the ground are fired up. They're knocking on doors every day. Our state party has made 28 times more phone calls than we had at this point in 2008."

Echoing the line voiced by the Romney campaign on Tuesday, Henderson also pushed back against recent polling data, saying many of the pollsters have been including too many Democrats in their samples.

"They're heavily weighted toward Democrats and it's not really reflective of the way the rest of this state thinks," Henderson said. "Everything on the ground is telling us that this race is still neck-and-neck."

Propecia ? the Queen of Hair Loss Treatment | Health and Fitness ...

Propecia may sound like a fancy girls name but when it comes to dealing with hair loss she is definitely the Queen of hair restoration medications.? Of all the hair loss products on the market there are only two medications that are approved by the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) as clinically proven to promote hair growth and hair regrowth while reversing baldness.

Finasteride or Propecia is one, and Minoxidil (Rogaine or Foam Rogaine) is the other and these are the only medications that the FDA has approved and only after very extensive clinical trials.

What is Baldness?

Baldness and hair loss is caused by testosterone, and in particular a version of it known as dihydrotestosterone or DHT, the male hormone that makes us look and sound like guys.

The trouble with testosterone and DHT is that after we become adults they start having a very different set of effects on our body.

You may start noticing hair grow out of your nose or out of your ears ? why it does that we have no idea, but we also know that hair loss on our head also starts and we simply don?t buy into all the aerodynamic explanations that keep coming our way.

DHT starts to constrict the blood supply to your follicles and this starts to show initially as thinning hair leading to baldness.? If you don?t start a hair loss remedy pretty soon after baldness sets in then you?ll only be able to get some hair on there if you go get a hair transplant.

A hair transplant is a pretty drastic and expensive way of hair replacement and it?s better to deal with the problem before it gets to that point.? Tackling hair loss as soon as it starts is the best way of dealing with baldness ? remember offense in this case is the best form of defense!

Enter Propecia ? she?ll make your hair stand on end!

Propecia tackles hair loss by directly working on your levels of DHT in your body.

By lowering the level of DHT that leaves less to attack your follicles and so they stay healthier for longer.

Propecia doesn?t just do that though ? Propecia actively works to stop DHT from binding itself to follicles and choking off the blood flow.

How do I buy Propecia?

Before you can get your hands on one of the most popular hair loss treatments you?ll need to get a doctor to write a Propecia prescription for you.

You?ll find you can order Propecia easily and simply online or at your local pharmacy but you?ll find it cheaper online than in town.

How do I take Propecia?

Propecia is just one simple pill that is taken each day.? Your doctor will prescribe a dosage that is suitable for you.

Often you?ll be recommended to use a medicated shampoo such as Nizoral to help keep your scalp and hair in top condition.

Other than that, there?s nothing more to say ? it?s that easy!

How safe is Propecia?

Bottom line, Propecia is safe! It does have the potential for one major side effect, and you need to decide if you?re willing to risk that side effect. And that side effect is possible libido loss.? Yes, you could potentially lose interest in sex and perhaps have issues with getting or maintaining an erection.

So if that particularly huge side effect isn?t an issue for you, then Propecia may be for you..

Propecia went through a five year clinical program to test out how effective it is at hair restoration.? Not only that it was tested rigorously to see what the side effects were and it is perfectly safe when used as instructed, with the one side effect previously mentioned.

Remember, Propecia is only one of two medications that the FDA has approved not only for effective hair loss treatment but also because it is safe to use.? If you want to see how big a deal that is, just take a look at all the hair loss treatments that are out there and ask yourself, why only two are FDA approved!

When should I start Propecia?

The golden rule is that the sooner you start treating your hair loss condition the faster and better the results will be.

Propecia has been clinically tested and demonstrated to help regenerate hair on bald patches on the head and that is a big, big leap ahead compared to other hair treatments.

You?ll find that Propecia is not only simple to use and highly effective but very cost effective.? Many people spend thousands of dollars on hair treatments that simply don?t work.? Because Propecia has had FDA approval you know that it is not only safe but that it works!

I?ve tried tons of hair loss products and review them at my site. You can learn from my mistakes. Want to see what I am using now?? Hint: It?s not what you think.? Visit my web page to find out more ? there?s a plethora of information on every hair loss treatment imaginable.

Hard Rock swings with golf in China | CNNGo.com

Rock music enjoys a niche following in China. So does golf.

Now they're being welded together in attempt to attract Chinese tourists.

Hard Rock International is swinging into mainland China, partnering with golf resort-operator Mission Hills.

The Florida-based hospitality company will?open the mainland's first two Hard Rock Hotels?by 2015 to let the nation's well-heeled tourists live, eat and party like rock stars.?(Outside of the mainland, Macau already houses a Hard Rock Hotel.)

The two new hotels?will be located in Mission Hills' golf and leisure complexes: the?150,000-square-meter Mission Hills Centreville in Shenzhen and the 80-square-kilometer, 10-course Mission Hills Hainan resort.

The combined construction cost for the two properties?is expected to be RMB 900 million (US$142.7 million).

hard rock hotel China -- inlineThe shape of swings to come: Hard Rock Hotel Shenzhen.

New experience for Chinese

Ken Chu, chairman and CEO of Mission Hills Group, said the company chose to work with Hard Rock because he wanted to introduce the mainland to a brand that "people have not experienced."

By bringing the music-theme hotel brand to his Shenzhen resort, Chu said he hoped to develop a comprehensive tourism complex.

The 22-story Hard Rock Hotel Shenzhen will contain 280 rooms while the Haikou property will host 250 rooms.

Both hotels are expected to keep the brand's traditional rock-influenced interiors and facilities such as a recording studio.

According to Mission Hills, each hotel will have a ?signature restaurant,? but the company did not confirm whether or not this would be a Hard Rock Caf?.

More on CNN:?China:?Luxury hotel 'groundscraper' planned in abandoned quarry

Hard Rock already has a golf course at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, where guests can play the 18-hole course designed by U.S. golf legend Jack Nicklaus.

Public reactions

Golf and rock draw different fans in China: golf appeals to affluent executives, while rock draws aspiring, rebellious youngsters. So is their marriage facing a promising future in China?s tourism market?

Eheart Chen, 35, is a Shanghai-born singer and a fan of British Rock. Chen said he has heard of Hard Rock Caf?, but not the hotel.

?But I?d definitely be interested to stay at the hotel if it?s not too expensive,? said Chen, who names The Smiths as his favorite band.

"Rock fans in China usually do not have a very high spending power," added Chen.

Wang Jing (??), senior hotel business director at travel booking site Qunar, said such rock-themed hotels would definitely become popular among young Chinese travelers, but their locations would be critical to their business.

Wang said he would expect to see the hotels being built around music conservatories, bar areas, concert halls and stadiums -- in short, places that already draw lots of music fans.

Jenny Lo, 33, a seasoned hotel branding consultant, said mainland Chinese travelers are receptive to distinctively different hotel experiences.

?But with the two upcoming properties being in golf resorts, that may change the dynamics,? added Lo. ?They may appeal to families, and I do not think they will be as attractive to young individual travelers.?

Hard Rock and Mission Hills are yet to announce the room rates of the two Hard Rock Hotels in China, but the nightly rate at Hard Rock Macau usually starts from MOP 2,000 (US$250).

Basic Tips And Strategies On Affiliate Marketing | Internet Marketing ...

Due to their low start-up costs and apparent ease of management, many webmasters are tempted to employ affiliate marketing systems. The entire stocking, handling, and shipping process is seen to by the vendor, not the webmaster. However, affiliate marketing has nuances that sometimes require careful attention.

Try to sell something that is quite popular already. A lot of webmasters avoid the most popular affiliate marketing products, thinking that the competition will be too tough to deal with. Generally speaking, however, it is often much easier to enjoy high sales rates in a proven niche than it is in a relatively unpopular niche. You should remember that the popular niches have a buyer pool that is already primed for the products and connecting with them is the only challenge. Your priority is finding a way to distinguish yourself from the competition, no matter what niche you get into.

Disclose your affiliations to your readers. Customers will know you are honest and be more likely to buy.

Only put your stamp of approval on products you believe in. Whatever you recommend should be a reflection on your business. Customers will have more faith in your business if you recommend other good products. A good way to keep your customers is to continue promoting good products that have good prices.

If you have banner ads, you should put a trivia question on one and make it so that the user has to visit your site in order to get the answer. Most people will be unable to leave without clicking on the banner. Entice your visitors by providing discounts to those who answer the questions correctly.

Don?t clutter your website with too many banner ads. This will make your site look horrible and drive off potential customers. Your site should be mostly content, not banners, and the banners that are there should be spread out across the page.

When someone visits your themed website with that particular theme in mind, that is what they are thinking about. Unless the link is sports related, placing a link on an affiliate site can not help you. If the site has relevant links, people will be more likely to access them.

Use various venues for advertising affiliate products. There are those that find their products online. Other customers like a physical brochure or enjoy seeing a product on a flier. Some are avid coupon clippers and like to get a discount. As you expand the scope and format of your advertising, you will grab the attention of many potential new clients.

Always be truthful and let your readers know that you are making money when they buy using your links. Your readers understand when you put up a link to an affiliate so do not try and hide it. Through this act of integrity your business is surely to grow.

If you want to be successful at affiliate marketing, know your audience. Understanding their wants, and needs is a smart marketing move. Analyze your site traffic to determine what is driving the most people to your site. What do your customers look for when they visit your site?

Do business with those affiliate companies that provide resource support to their affiliates. These companies are in it to make profit just like you are. They know the ins and outs of marketing and what techniques are effective,. Those affiliate companies that share their selling secrets do better in the marketplace. That means better sales for them and higher commissions for you.

Show potential customers pictures of customers using the product. By giving your potential customer a lot of good information, you are helping him or her to decide whether or not to trust you and purchase your product. This can lead to good word-of-mouth advertising in the future.

Often, communicating not only protects, but also strengthens, the bond with affiliate partners. Frequent communication works as a way to protect your affiliate revenue stream. Good affiliates are worth their weight in gold, and so you must ensure you hang onto them.

Acting on tips from a few sources can be more effective than reading dozens of different opinions. You put in time with no compensation upfront, as well as take the risk of not making any money. Recognize that if you continually research new techniques and never apply any, you?re stalling. Choose a few good tips, put down the books, and put what you?ve learned into action.

Proving that you are a legitimate affiliate marketer takes some strategic finesse. Your links should be more subtle. You want your customers to be comfortable buying through you.

Choose your affiliates with your target market in mind. Make sure that the advertising on your site matches what your site is selling. Those who visit your site have expectations about the content, including ads, they might see. Place ads that cater to your customers and take advantage of this idea.

When you start your affiliate marketing venture, take the time to locate affiliates that can offer you the types of products and services that you are interested in promoting. Entering into agreements with a vast range of affiliate networks will give you multiple lines of income. Do some research before you accept an affiliate to ensure that you feel comfortable promoting them.

Learn about how the affiliate marketing program tracks outside orders when you choose a program. If your site visitors place orders on the affiliate?s site and those purchases are not properly linked to your ID, then you run the risk of losing a good amount of commission.

For the most profitable affiliate marketing program, retain only those affiliates who have proven they can make you money. Watch how your affiliates perform on a regular basis. Never be afraid to cut ties with an affiliate that doesn?t make you any money, and go with someone who is more profitable.

Continue to reach your goals beyond making a profit. If you work hard all of the time you will see your income go up. It may be difficult to invest the time and patience at first, but in the end, it will be well worth your while.

Libya orders 'illegitimate' militias to disband

BENGHAZI, Libya (AP) ? Libya's president ordered all of the country's militias to come under government authority or disband, a move that appeared aimed at harnessing popular anger against the powerful armed groups following the attack that killed the U.S. ambassador.

The assault on the U.S. mission in Benghazi, which killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans, has sparked an angry backlash among many Libyans against the myriad armed factions that continue to run rampant across the nation nearly a year after the end of the country's civil war. On Friday, Benghazi residents staged a mass demonstration against the militias, and stormed the compounds of several armed groups in the city in an unprecedented protest to demand the militias dissolve.

Late Saturday, President Mohammed el-Megaref told reporters that the militias, which the weak central government has relied upon for providing security in neighborhoods and at state facilities since Gadhafi's ouster, must fall under the authority of the national government or be disbanded.

He said a joint operations room in Benghazi will coordinate between the various authorized armed brigades and the army. Armed groups operating outside the "legitimacy of the state" will be disbanded, and the military and police will take control over those militias' barracks, he said.

In a statement published by the official LANA news agency, the military asked all armed groups using the army's camps and outposts and barracks in Tripoli and other cities to hand them over. It warned that it will resort to force if the groups refuse.

Since Gadhafi's ouster and killing in October, a series of interim leaders in Libya has struggled to bring order to a country that was eviscerated during the eccentric dictator's 42-year rule, with security forces and the military intentionally kept weak and government institutions hollowed of authority.

The militias, which arose as people took up arms to fight Gadhafi's regime, bristle with heavy weapons, pay little attention to national authorities and are accused by some of acting like gangs, carrying out killings.

The government has brought some militias nominally under the authority of the military or Interior Ministry, but even those retain separate commanders and often are only superficially subordinate to the state.

A mass protest Friday against militias against the compounds of several armed groups in Benghazi lasted into early Saturday, as thousands stormed the headquarters of Ansar al-Shariah, an Islamic extremist group suspected in the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. Consulate.

They drove out the Ansar gunmen and set fire to cars in the compound ? once a major base for Gadhafi's feared security forces ? and then moved onto the base of a second Islamist militia, the Rafallah Sahati Brigade. Brigade fighters opened fire to keep the protesters at bay.

The state news agency said four protesters were killed and 70 injured in the violence.

The benefits of home ownership | Midwest Voices

Tom Woods
Special to the Star

The Kansas City Star

Since our nation?s first days as a newly fledged republic, homeownership has been a cherished ideal. Reasons as diverse as our population have impelled generations of Americans to work hard and make the sacrifices necessary to own a?home.

That?s because the benefits of homeownership are?many.

Perhaps most important is that owning a home provides an unparalleled sense of well-being, security and?achievement.

Moreover, homeownership has always been ? and continues to be ? the single best long-term investment for most?Americans.

It is a primary source of wealth and financial security for many households, helping to provide for education, retirement and?more.

Even in the wake of the Great Recession, with its severe housing market crisis, Americans continue to value?homeownership.

Almost all (96 percent) of the people polled in a survey conducted earlier this year for the National Association of Home Builders by two nationally known polling firms said they are happy with their decision to own a?home.

That sentiment held true even among people whose homes are ?under?water.?

Eighty-four percent of those who owe more on their mortgage than their home?s current value said they are happy with their decision to own a?home.

The nationwide survey of 1,500 people who are likely to vote in the 2012 elections also found that a significant majority ? 76 percent ? think owning a home is the best long-term investment they can make and is worth the ups and downs of the housing market. Among people who don?t currently own a home, 68 percent hope to own a home in the future, the poll?found.

Just as homeownership provides many benefits to individual families, it also benefits the?nation.

Whenever new homes are built, new jobs are created and a permanent source of ongoing revenue for local, state and federal government springs to life that supports local schools and communities across the?land.

Just consider: Building 100 average single-family homes creates 305 jobs and generates more than $23 million in wage and business income as well as $8.9 million in taxes and revenue for state, local and federal?governments.

The employment effects are broad based, extending far beyond the construction workers employed directly to build the?homes.

Jobs are generated in the industries that manufacture and supply the many products that go into building the home. They are also created when real estate agents, lawyers and brokers provide services to home builders and home?buyers.

The NAHB poll also showed that 75 percent of all respondents ? both owners and renters ? believe the federal government should provide tax incentives to promote?homeownership.

And across the political spectrum, more than two-thirds ? 68 percent ? said they would be less likely to vote for a candidate who supports eliminating the mortgage interest?deduction.

As the debate over housing policy unfolds, it is crucial to ensure that homeownership remains affordable and?attainable.

Concerned citizens who believe that homeownership should be an important national priority are encouraged to go to www.ProtectHomeownership.com/KansasCity and register to attend a Rally for Homeownership that will take place Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum, located at 500 West U.S. 24 in?Independence.

Tom Woods is 3rd vice president of the National Association of Home Builders. He lives in Independence.

It's painful to feel as though you still love a woman and you are no longer in a relationship with her. That can easily lead you to believe that the best thing that you can do is to find a way to make things work out with her. While that is one option that you can take, it is not the only one. There are times when you do have to just let things go and stay in the past even if you still feel like you love your ex girlfriend.

Here are some tips on how to deal with feeling like you still love your ex girlfriend even though you are no longer in a relationship with her anymore:

1) Realize that you can still feel love for an ex girlfriend and move on with your life.

Just because there are still some lingering feelings there, that does not mean that you need to stay stuck in the past. It may feel comfortable to do that, but sometimes comfort can be a bad thing when it does not allow you to move forward with your life. You don't have to necessarily forget about her or anything like that. You can just move on and see what else is out there.

2) It's much easier to move on when you are able to connect with other people.

If you were to sit at home, alone and think about your ex girlfriend all of the time, then there is no way that you can expect to get over her. You'd just be making any feelings that you have for her grow stronger. On the other hand, if you allow yourself to get out and connect with other people, you might find that your feelings for her start to soften a bit. You can hang out with friends just so that you have a good time and are not by yourself. You can hang out with women so that you can see that there are other options for you.

3) Appreciate the fact that you did have someone that you loved before in your life and use that appreciation to drive you forward.

There are plenty of people out there who deep down feel like they have never really experienced romantic love, so take some time to just appreciate the fact that you have been able to experience that. As they say, "it's better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all." Even though that may sound trite and cliche, it can help to drive you forward so that you can move on to the next relationship or next phase in your life.

One of the hardest things that you have to deal with is finding out that your ex girlfriend is dating again and even though that may seem like the end of the world, it doesn't have to be. You can learn to bounce back and how to win the love of a new woman if you want to.

Metals - Colombia - Imports cause plant shutdowns, job losses in local steel sector - union

Brazilian steelmaker Gerdau has closed two of its Colombian plants due to a sharp increase in steel imports in the local market, the president of Sintrametal metalworkers union, Mauricio Castro, told BNamericas.

"At the Tocancip? plant 190 workers lost their jobs, and at the Sidemu?a plant, located in Sibat? district, another 90 workers have been dismissed," Castro said.

Both plants are located in the department of Cundinamarca, in the country's central region.

Castro said that due to product "invasions" there will most likely be large job losses at local steel producer Sidenal, located in Boyac? department, at the end of September.

Boyac? accounts for 52% the country's steel production.

"We're facing a rather large challenge with our companies in the sense that they cannot hide behind this situation in order to close down plants, even more so when we have pending collective agreements due in December," Castro said.

Workers in the sector have called on the government of President Juan Manuel Santos to reconsider the signing of free trade agreements (FTA), which are being negotiated with Turkey and South Korea, since the country is now importing large amounts of Turkish products.

Given the situation, the sector is organizing a forum in order to explain to workers and to the community the motive for the plant shutdowns.

In January, however, the national industry association (ANDI) predicted this year's steel production will be 1.8Mt, an increase of 5% compared to 2011.

In 2012, the upward growth trend seen over the last few years will continue, though at a more moderate rate, said the association.

Feedback: Electrons are so good for your feet

Electrons are so good for your feet

AUSTIN THOMPSON is worried that his shoes are preventing him from absorbing electrons. The worry stems from reading about Pluggz "Get Grounded" Flip Flops at bit.ly/groundedshoes.

"People say they feel better when walking barefoot on grass or sand or earth," the promo says. "According to modern science that's because being barefoot enables the body to efficiently absorb earth's abundant electrons. The very same electrons that make us feel good." (Isn't it amazing what modern science tells us these days?)

"Traditional shoes interfere with this absorption," the blurb goes on. "Not pluggz. Every pair of pluggz has a black plug - the round circle towards the front of the shoe, beneath your metatarsal - that is particularly adept at allowing the free transfer of the electrons... giving your body what it needs to help heal itself, and stay balanced and happy."

Shoe science must have come on a bit since Feedback last bought a pair, but even so we can't help wondering about this. Surely everybody knows that shoes alone can't make you happy - you need a matching handbag for that.

On a field trip to Tenerife in the Canary Islands, Patrick Kennedy was taken aback to find a menu offering "little squids with potatoes in their jackets"

Avoid sharp tuning

WHEN Julian Eley was sorting through his deceased father's belongings, he came across an eight-page set of instructions for the Baird Televisor home reception kit.

In these days of HDTV, he was intrigued to read: "Extreme selectivity is not necessary or desirable and any form of sharp tuning that tends to distort or reduce the upper frequencies of the signal should be avoided."

Anachronistic football fixture

BOB MALLICK was puzzled by a message apparently sent from the Barclays Premier (football) League, alerting him to a match due to be played nearly three years ago. More puzzling still, the timing of the match was itself the result of a 30-year postponement.

Headed "Fixture Change Notification", the message began "Hi Bob", then went on to say: "The date and/or time of each Barclays Premier League fixture below has been amended: Man Utd v Everton, Wembley - This fixture was originally scheduled to be played on 22 Nov 1977 at 00:00. Due to lightning it will now be played on 23 Nov 2009 at 07:00."

Bob thinks this message has to have been spam. If so, what was it trying to sell? What was the point of it? Sometimes electronic communications are just plain weird (see bit.ly/PLemail).

Protection from ice creams

THE weather was pleasant when Chris Goddard and his family visited the Center Parcs holiday centre in Elveden Forest, Suffolk, UK, so they purchased ice creams from the boathouse by the lake.

At the bottom of the lengthy receipt for this transaction, along with a sales tax number and the instruction to keep the receipt, was the advice: "A cycle helmet is recommended."

Chris wants to know if any readers are aware of circumstances in which consuming ice cream is rendered less hazardous by wearing a cycle helmet. For example, does eating ice cream make one susceptible to meteorite strikes? If not, what?

NASA mixes its metres again

OH DEAR. NASA is mixing up its measurements again. Paul Cornock alerts us to a video on the NASA website at bit.ly/NASAunits. Entitled Curiosity's Seven Minutes of Terror, the clip dramatically describes the entry, descent and landing (EDL) sequence of the Curiosity Mars rover.

When the video gets to the final stage of the EDL, a NASA engineer explains: "Twenty metres above the surface we have to lower the rover below us on a tether that's 21 feet long."

Is it redundant or is it art?

A COLOUR photograph sent in by Simon Smallwood features a wall in Witney, Oxfordshire, UK. Inlaid in the wall is what Simon rightly describes as a "beautifully carved sign" made of a material that appears to be stone.

The elegant lettering on the sign, which would have taken a mason several hours to create, reads: "THIS SIGN IS NOT IN USE. By order of the Magistrate. MCMXXXVII."

That's 1937 in today's numerals, so this sign in Witney has been proclaiming its redundancy for the past 75 years - unless, that is, it is a 21st-century work of "art".

Two-dimensional Gary Barlow

AN ANNOUNCEMENT on the cover of Hello! magazine on 5 June provided Alan Slater with food for thought. In what the magazine claimed was a "world first!", it promised: "See Gary in true 3D. Download the free Hello! 3D app."

The question that came into Alan's mind was: "If no one in the world has seen Take That's Gary Barlow in 3D until now, has he actually been two-dimensional? Is he an escaped flatlander, and if so, how did he gain an extra dimension?"

Worried vegetarian

FINALLY, "What are vegetarian meatballs made of? Vegetarians, of course!" This was the response of one reader to our brief note about "vegetarian meatballs in sauce" (18 August). The reader signs himself "Erik Foxcroft (a worried vegetarian)".

Obama suggests Romney is out of touch with America

(AP) ? President Barack Obama cast Mitt Romney on Thursday as an out-of-touch challenger for the White House and an advocate of education cuts that could cause teacher strikes to spread from Chicago to other cities. The Republican countered that the U.S. economy "is bumping along the bottom" under the current administration and he predicted victory in the fall.

The two men eyed each other across hotly contested Florida, a state with 29 electoral votes, more than any other battleground in the close race for the White House.

"When you express an attitude that half the country considers itself victims, that somehow they want to be dependent on government, my thinking is maybe you haven't gotten around a lot," the president said. That was in response to a question about Romney's recent observation that 47 percent of Americans pay no income tax and believe they are victims and entitled to an array of federal benefits.

Obama spoke at a town hall-style forum aired by the Spanish-language television network Univision.

For his part, Romney was eager to move past that controversy, which has knocked him off stride. He disclosed plans for a three-day bus tour early next week through Ohio with running mate Paul Ryan and sought to return the campaign focus to the economic issues that have dominated the race all year.

At a fundraiser in Sarasota, Fla., Romney looked ahead to his televised head-to-head encounters with Obama this fall. "He's a very eloquent speaker, and so I'm sure in the debates, as last time ... he'll be very eloquent in describing his vision," the Republican said. "But he can't win by his words, because his record speaks so loudly in our ears. What he has done in the last four years is establish an economy that's bumping along the bottom."

Less than seven weeks before Election Day, polls make the race a close one, likely to be settled in eight or so swing states where neither man has a solid edge. Obama has gained ground in polls in some of those states since the completion of the Democratic National Convention two weeks ago, while Romney has struggled with controversies of his own making that have left Republicans frustrated at his performance as a candidate.

Still, there were fresh signs of weakness in the nation's job market as the two candidates vied for support in Florida.

The Labor Department said the number of Americans seeking unemployment fell only slightly last week, to a seasonally adjusted level of 382,000, suggesting that businesses remain reluctant to add to their payrolls. The four-week average rose for the fifth straight week to the highest level in nearly three months.

After more than two days of struggle, Romney seemed eager to leave the 47 percent controversy behind as he appeared at the Univision forum Wednesday night. "'My campaign is about the 100 percent in America," he said firmly.

But Obama made his most extensive comments to date on the subject since the emergence of a video showing Romney telling donors last May that as a candidate his job wasn't to worry about 47 percent of the country.

"Their problem is not they're not working hard enough or they don't want to work or they're being taxed too little or they just want to loaf around and gather government checks," the president said."

"Are there people that abuse the system? Yes, both at the bottom and at the top," he added, including millionaires who he said pay no income taxes. He said many at the low end of the income scale pay other forms of taxes, and some who don't pay taxes are senior citizens, students, disabled, veterans or soldiers who are stationed overseas.

"Americans work hard, and if they are not working right now I promise you they want to go to work," he said.

As for education, the president said Romney and running mate Ryan advocate a budget that would cut federal funds for schools by about 20 percent.

"And you could see potentially even more teachers being laid off, working conditions for teachers becoming even worse and potentially for more strikes," he said.

The president added that under his administration, "what we say to school districts all across the country is we will provide you with more help as long as you're being accountable, and as far as teachers go, I think they work as hard as anybody, but we also want to make sure that they are having high standards of performance in math and science."

Among other changes, Republicans favor repealing a 2010 change in the program that made the federal government the direct lender for student loans, replacing private banks. Democrats say a decrease in administrative fees made more money available for loans, while Republicans argue the change has raised the government's debt.

Money was not a significant issue in the Chicago strike. Mayor Rahm Emanuel secured an extension of the school day and empowered principals to hire the teachers they want. Teachers were able to soften a new evaluation process and win some job protections.

Obama, who ran on a message of changing the partisan tone in Washington, told the Univision audience that he had come to the conclusion that "you can't change Washington from the inside. You can only change it from the outside." He went on to say that what he had accomplished since taking office was due to mobilizing "the American people to speak out."

Romney seized on the remarks to say that Obama had surrendered in the face of a broken Washington and major challenges. "I can change Washington. I will change Washington," he told supporters in Florida. "We'll get the job done from the inside ? Republicans and Democrats will come together. He can't do it. His slogan was 'Yes, we can.' His slogan now is 'No, I can't.' This is time for a new president."

The day's campaign events showed the complexities of campaigning in Florida, a state that is home to large populations of seniors and of Hispanics.

Romney released a new television commercial designed to appeal to both groups.

It features Sen. Marco Rubio plugging the Republicans' plan to overhaul Medicare, a flashpoint in the campaign that Obama says could threaten future beneficiaries with high out-of-pocket costs.

Saying his mother is 81, Rubio declares in the ad: "We can save Medicare without changing hers, but only if younger Americans accept that our Medicare will be different than our parents', when we retire in 30 years.

"But after all they did for us, isn't that the least we can do?"

While Obama is likely to win the Hispanic vote overwhelmingly, he drew criticism in his appearance.

He said the lack of immigration reform legislation was his biggest failure as president and "not for a lack of trying or desire." He said he couldn't find a single Republican to help work on the legislation. "I'm happy to take responsibility for being naive here," the president said when pressed to admit he broke his promise.

Univision anchor Jorge Ramos interjected: "You promised us, and a promise is a promise. And with all due respect, you didn't keep that promise."

Obama drew praise from Hispanic groups earlier in the year when he announced a policy shift that will allow some immigrants brought to the United States illegally as children to avoid deportation.

Romney has been critical of the change, but has declined to say if he would reverse it if he wins the White House.

In a report filed with the Federal Election Commission, the challenger's campaign said that as of Aug. 31, it had about $50 million available to spend in the final two months of the race. It also reported a bank debt of $15 million, of which officials say $4 million has been repaid.

RolePlayGateway?

Roleplayers wanted for a Star Ocean Online!

roleplay/star-ocean-online/

Premise:
Star Ocean released a VR-MMO. However, players mysterious begin to vanish from our world, their souls trapped inside their player characters within the game. Faced with the very real possibility of death within the world they love, what will they do?

The RP takes place in a Virtual Reality Massive Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game and players start on the planet Elicoor II and the MMO follows after an alternate version of the Events of Star Ocean Till the End of Time.

Players can play as:
1. A player trapped within their character in the world.
2. A member of a group of players dedicating their time to illegally playing the game normally (but are not trapped themselves), in order to try to free the players.
3. Players playing the game illegally for any number of their own reasons.

Image

Q/A:
How many characters can be in this RP?
Two characters per-person are permitted for Star Ocean Online

Why did you create Star Ocean Online?
I created Star Ocean Online because I saw the anime Sword Art Online and instantly fell in love with the premise of people being trapped within the video game world they love. I'd been considering making a roleplay involving Star Ocean III as it is my favorite JRPG of all time and decided that I would merge the ideas together to create one roleplay. So I did.

What Planets are in Star Ocean Online, which ones are playable and will there ever be more?
I'm going to listen to player feedback on if there will ever be more, but for the time being I don't want to overwhelm players with too many worlds at once, especially with how huge some of them can be. With that said, players will start out on Elicoor II, but as their character "levels up", which will be determined by the staff of the Roleplay, players will gradually get strong enough to reach what I call "Medium Level" and can go to Klaus III. Eventually after, when they reach High Levels they can go to the planet of the main antagonists which is called Diablo. I will also have some item shops and weapons shops on "Earth" so I guess technically that makes 4 planets, but really people will start out with just Elicoor II to fight on.

What makes Star Ocean Online so special?
The idea that you aren't just role-playing in a world not your own, you are actually playing as someone who is trapped within the beautiful fantasy world they love so much

What do we want from potential roleplayers?
There will be no word minimum, as I think its quality that should matter, not quanitity. These are really two different things and people often don't realize this. That said, story book format only, meaning write you RP posts as if they were a novel or novella, etc.

Please do not do such things as:

*runs up to you* hi! *hugs*

Yeah don't do that.

Who am I?
Well, I'm new here but I've roleplaying for more than roughly 8 years. I've been roleplaying on various websites. I started RPing on Gaiaonline back when it was still a new website, and I've roleplayed on (as well as been a moderator for) Saiyanisland.com and Animefans.com. I'm quite experienced at roleplaying and have been writing all sorts of novels (mostly unfinished) most of my life. I guess if you need to know more, ask. I'm a pretty open person really.

Either way I really hope to see more people for this RP, as I think the idea is both awesome and brilliant! I'm really excited for it and I hope to see us have our own sort of community, perhaps someday with Guilds and everything! I think this'll be a blast and I can't wait to see more people arrive!

Cya there ;)

Paris' Louvre Museum unveils Islamic Art wing

PARIS (AP) ? The Louvre Museum is unveiling a new wing and galleries dedicated to the arts of Islam, culminating a nearly ?100 million ($130 million), decade-long project coming to fruition amid tensions between the Muslim world and the West.

The new dragonfly-shaped building marks the famed Paris museum's greatest development since its iconic glass pyramid constructed 20 years ago. The Department of Islamic Art will exhibit much of the Louvre's 18,000 works, hoping also to foster cultural understanding.

Mosaics from the Damascus mosque and a 15th-century Mamluk porch are among works spanning from 632 to 1800 A.D. Donors included Morocco's King Mohammed VI and Saudi Prince Waleed Bin Talal's foundation.

Louvre director Henri Loyrette says the galleries aim to showcase "the radiant face of a civilization."

The wing, with its mission of heightening cross-cultural understanding, is opening at a tense ? and perhaps opportune ? time.

France stepped up security Wednesday at its embassies across the Muslim world after a French satirical weekly published lewd caricatures of Islam's Prophet Muhammad. Charlie Hebdo, whose offices were firebombed last year, was brandishing its right to free speech. But the publication raised concerns that France could face violent protests like the ones targeting the United States over an amateur video produced in California ridiculing the prophet that have left at least 30 people dead.

French officials said the weekly was throwing "oil on the fire" and urged calm. France has western Europe's largest Muslim population.

In a sign of the political importance of the new Louvre exhibit, French President Francois Hollande attended an opening ceremony Tuesday, calling it a "political gesture in the service of respect for peace." The Saudi prince and the president of Azerbaijan, accompanied him.

Hollande criticized those who "destroy the values of Islam by resorting to violence and hate."

"The best weapons for fighting fanaticism that claims to be coming from Islam are found in Islam itself," he said. "What more beautiful message than that demonstrated here by these works."

The Louvre opened a department of Islamic art in 2003, under former President Jacques Chirac, who said he wanted to highlight the contributions of Muslim civilizations on Western culture. Chirac, who vigorously opposed the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, constantly pushed for the idea of a "dialogue of cultures" to break down the misunderstandings between the West and the Muslim world.

But its gallery could initially display only a fraction of the thousands of pieces of art from the Muslim world, so it decided under Chirac on an ambitious expansion.

The museum opens to the public Saturday.
