What officials at the youth charity the Second Mile knew about the extent of child-abuse allegations against the group?s founder, former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, and how they responded is the subject of a special report by Harrisburg, Pa., daily The Patriot-News.
The five-article package details how Second Mile leaders forced Mr. Sandusky to resign after he revealed to them that he was under investigation for inappropriate conduct with minors but largely kept members of the charity?s board out of the loop about the status of the criminal investigation in the months before the ex-coach?s arrest last November.
The Second Mile called off a planned internal investigation of its handling of the scandal, saying the inquiry was made moot by the organization?s plans to transfer its assets and programs to another charity, the Texas-based Arrow Child and Family Ministries.
Mr. Sandusky, who started the Second Mile in 1977 to provide athletic and education programs for underprivileged youths, was convicted in June of 45 counts of child sexual abuse and is awaiting sentencing.
