A high school football star riding a bike in the Bronx was struck by a cowardly driver who knocked the teen into the path of an oncoming SUV that ran over and killed him.
David (Troy) Ellis, 18, was one of two people killed by hit-and-run drivers in the Bronx beginning late Friday. Relatives of the Jamaica High School student were devastated.
?He?s just my everything,? said his weeping sister Tara Ellis at the family?s Bronx home. ?He was just a wonderful kid, the ideal person.?
Ellis contacted his sister at 11:04 p.m. Friday to say he was with friends, she said. Sixteen minutes later, he was hit by the speeding car.
TEAMMATES MOURN THE LOSS OF PROMISING STAR, DAVID ELLIS
The promising cornerback was pedaling on his friend?s bike near the intersection of East Gun Hill Road and Webster Ave. in Williamsbridge when he was hit by a 2001 Nissan Maxima. Ellis landed in the southbound lanes of Webster Ave. and directly in the path of a Ford Explorer, police said.
The driver of the SUV had no chance to stop and ran over the high school senior, police said. Ellis was taken to Montefiore Medical Centerwhere he died.
The driver of the Maxima and a passenger ran from the scene, abandoning the car. A police source said cops know who they?re looking for, but were still hunting for them late Saturday.
?He was ready to go to college,? Tara Ellis said of her brother. ?Lots of colleges were looking at him.?
She said her brother grew up in New York but moved to Florida for a few years to escape the city. He returned a year ago to play football at Jamaica High.
?He was just a good kid,? she said. ?He left so many people behind and we all love him so much. It?s so sad.?
David Ellis and his family.
Like many others who knew Ellis, his high school coach was reduced to tears after hearing the news.
?Oh my God, no,? said head coach Calvin Whitfield before he broke down and wept. ?I can?t believe this. Oh God, no.?
Whitfield said Ellis, who was also going to spend time at wide receiver in the fall, had received interest from coaches at Temple University and Fordham. The future team captain was poised for a breakout season.
?He was a hard worker and a committed kid,? said the coach, adding that the team would honor Ellis this season. ?He had a lot of promise.?
Abdul Rahm Ibrahim, Ellis? fellow cornerback, said he considered the teen to be more ?like family? than just a teammate.
?I really don?t believe it, still,? said Ibrahim, who was at a football tournament in Indianapolis but spoke to Ellis just hours before the tragedy.
