Such efforts have been crucial to the university's recent recognition in The Princeton Review's 2012 "Guide to 322 Green Colleges." UH has been recognized as a green university by The Princeton Review for three consecutive years.
"UH is thrilled to be recognized again by The Princeton Review as one of the nation's greenest colleges," said Emily Messa, associate vice president for administration. "This is a testament to the integration of sustainability into the fabric of our university. We recognize that sustainability is a continual journey and look forward to learning and growing with our community."
Messa is among the dedicated staff members and students overseeing Green UH, the initiative leading campus sustainability endeavors. Its partners include the university's Sustainability Task Force, Green UH Student Leadership Council and volunteer Eco Reps.
Green UH promotes daily green practices on campus through trayless dining, office and residence hall recycling programs, campus recycling receptacles, green commuting tips and green computing. Also, Green UH oversees the campus' community garden.
Each year, UH students also participate in the national Recyclemania competition. This year, the university has collected recyclable materials equivalent to 22 metric tons of carbon dioxide (comparable to taking 65 cars off the road).
UH also hosts annual sustainability events including Green UH Day and the Earth Day Carnival. This year's carnival is set for 10 a.m. 3 p.m., April 19 in the university's Butler Plaza (in front of the UH M.D. Anderson Library).
A highlight of last year's green efforts was the installation of the campus' first solar array. Through a $140,000 gift from Green Mountain Energy, UH received 88 photovoltaic solar panels for the university's central utility plant. The panels power its administrative offices and produce up to 23,615-kilowatt hours of clean energy each year. It is estimated that this array will contribute to energy savings of up to $300,000 over 30 years.
This year, UH also benefitted from 60 new recycling bins that were donated by ALCOA, as well as 300 new trees that were planted on campus.
The Princeton Review's Guide to 322 Green Colleges profiles institutions of higher education in the United States and Canada that demonstrate a strong commitment to sustainability in academic offerings, campus infrastructure, activities and career preparation. The 232-page guide is the only free, comprehensive, annually updated guide to green colleges. It is published by The Princeton Review in collaboration with the U.S. Green Building Council. I think we can all safely agree that open source software development is here to stay. Open, collaborative development has fundamentally changed not only how we code, but also the code we produce. It's easier than ever to build complex solutions by reusing existing components. A new report from Sonatype examines the current state of open source in the enterprise. Although heavily slanted toward open source Java consumption, the trends are interesting. It's also worth pointing out that Sonatype provides a solution for open source software management, so they have a stake in the game here. Their data is worth a look, though. Nearly 80% of the enterprises surveyed consume open source software. Most interest to me: two thirds of the companies surveyed are actively contributing code back to the upstream projects they consume. Also interesting to note is that just shy of half of all surveyed companies have a formal open source policy in place. And of those with formal policies, half of the respondents cite those policies as detrimental to the success of development.
You could say the market for USB audio interfaces is pretty saturated. Many of the most-popular models have been around for years, with fewer significant product introductions as of late. That makes it even more bold for Propellerhead?traditionally a software vendor?to step into the hardware ring. Fortunately, its new Balance interface ($449 direct) is worthy of the cause, as it looks like no other recording system out there. It turns out the Balance's execution stands up as well, although it's a bit pricey for what you get.
Design, Connections, and Front Panel The chunky Balance measures 2.76 by 5.12 by 7.56 inches (HWD) and weighs 1.25 pounds. ?Its design is one of the Balance's best attributes, with its rubberized housing, cantered front panel, and extra-large, easy-to-read controls. The back panel contains two XLR microphone inputs, each with switchable 48-volt phantom power. You can also bypass those and use one of the three quarter-inch TRS input jacks corresponding to each channel, for Line 1, Line 2, Guitar, and a pad switch for taming hot signals. There are no stereo RCA or 3.5mm inputs or outputs; this is purely a professional-level interface.
For monitoring, a pair of quarter-inch output jacks let you hook up the Balance to an amplifier or a set of active studio monitor speakers. A quarter-inch headphone jack sits on the right side of the unit, right near the front?two headphone jacks would have been welcome at this price. And despite the Balance's good compliment of analog connectivity, there are no digital inputs, and no MIDI in or out, either.
The front panel is dominated by two massive volume knobs?one for the main outs, and one for the single headphone jack. Above that is a direct monitoring switch, which lets you monitor incoming recordings from a mic, guitar, or other instrument with zero latency. Two smaller knobs handle input levels for the left and right inputs; oddly, they click to specific settings, which shouldn't pose a problem in most cases, but doesn't afford as much granular control as I would have expected. There's also a clip safe light, and a useful, built-in meter and tuner button which pops up an appropriate window in Reason Essentials (more about that later). Two sets of three LEDs indicate signal, clipping status, recording status, and whether 48V phantom power is switched on. All controls and buttons engage and move with a precision feel.
Across the right side of the panel are two extra rows of four buttons, used to select the input mode for the jacks on the rear. This is strange, because typically you don't get this option, with all inputs being live as needed,?or software is used to make these adjustments. Propellerhead's design means you can hook up several pieces of gear to all of those rear-mounted inputs, such as two microphones, a guitar, a bass guitar, and a couple of synthesizers, and then switch between them using the front panel buttons. But even so, this is purely a two-channel recording interface, which is what makes it bizarre. There's no way to record signal from more than any two of those inputs simultaneously. This makes the Balance a rather expensive proposition, and puts it within just $150 of the incredible sounding (if Mac-only) two-channel Apogee Duet 2, as well as in the same ballpark as numerous interfaces that record four or even eight simultaneous channels?enough to record an entire band at once.
Reason Essentials Setup and Virtual Synths With the Balance, Propellerhead bundles Reason Essentials, a cut-down version of the company's flagship Reason recording software that still provides most of the program's best features. The package works on either Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista, or Windows 7 (including 64-bit mode in Vista and 7), as well as on any multi-core Mac running OS X 10.6.3 or later. For this review, I tested the Balance and Reason Essentials on a 2.93GHz quad-core Mac Pro with 6GB RAM and OS X 10.7 (Lion).
Installation is fairly simple. I inserted the DVD, dragged the Reason Essentials folder onto the Mac, and then plugged the interface into a free USB port. When I fired up the Reason icon, it turns out it wasn't done yet, as it popped up a warning about installing Ignition Key software. It then began copying sound banks over from the DVD. While the full version of Reason now employs a USB dongle, Reason Essentials uses the Balance as the dongle?disconnect the interface, and you can no longer use the software.
If you're willing to get a little creative, Reason Essentials includes enough power to handle many recording needs. It still gives you unlimited audio and instrument tracks, the new ReGroove mixer, and 1.45GB (rather than 2.5GB) of sound bank content. You get Propellerhead's venerable Subtractor synth and NN-XT sampler, but not the Malstrom, Neptune, or Thor synthesizers. On top of those, you still get a live sampling editor and ID-8 songwriter's toolbox, the Matrix pattern sequencer, the Combinator, the MClass mastering suite and master bus compressor, and a variety of basic effects boxes, including a reverb, Line 6-powered guitar and bass amps, a chorus and flanger, a digital delay, and the Scream 4 distortion box.
The new arrange window is a little tough to work with. It's not as flexible as a digital audio workstation like Pro Tools, because it's still designed like a vertically scrolling equipment rack. In today's world of widescreen desktop monitors with fewer vertical pixels, the UI looks oddly stretched out, with little room to see the virtual gear once the arrange and mixer windows are in place.
Testing, Sound Quality, and Conclusions In a series of recording and playback tests, I had problems with the Balance. The headphone jack sounded full, warm, and loud, and recordings came through reasonably clean using a Rode NT-1A large condenser microphone, with the Balance's 48-volt phantom power engaged. Using the default settings, I experienced 8ms latency on the way in, and 6ms on the way out, which was fine for playing drum tracks live using an M-Audio Keystation 49e keyboard. I was also able to flip on a reverb and record vocals while hearing it; in doing so, I heard some minor comb filtering, but it was easily usable?and this was without direct monitoring, which you can always engage for zero latency monitoring.
The default sound banks are versatile across the board, with plenty of synth pads, leads, multitimbral workstation-like sounds, and even dozens of sampled reverbs. If you keep in mind that many of these sound modules date back to the first version of Reason from more than 10 years ago, it's still a good sound set, and more than you'd ever get with, say, a workstation keyboard synthesizer from Korg or Roland 10 years ago.
Propellerhead is targeting a niche customer with the Balance: One who wants ultra-clean sound quality, plenty of connections, and tight integration with Reason, but that also doesn't need to record, say, more than one musician simultaneously most of the time. If that's you, it's tough to go wrong with the Balance. But if you want an interface with a lower price and a smaller footprint, the M-Audio Fast Track ($149.99, 4 stars) will get you most of the way there for less than half the cost, although you're giving up all of the extra connectivity and separate main and headphone volume knobs. Otherwise, a number of interfaces with eight microphone inputs, such as the 16-channel/4-out Tascam US-1800 ($399.99), give you more flexible recording power for the same or less money than the Balance.
Despite the global temperature increase and the overall shrinking of the world's glaciers, some glaciers in the Karakoram mountains have actually grown over the past decade, according to a new study.
Practicing good science often means accepting inconvenient data. The results of a new study that depict the recent growth of some Asian glaciers ? despite the warming global climate ? surely fall into this category, especially in the US where, according to a 2011 Harris Poll, public belief in manmade warming dropped from 71 percent in 2007 to 44 percent in 2011.

This research, led by glaciologist Julie Gardelle of the University of Grenoble, has confirmed suspicions about the massive glaciers in the Karakoram Mountains along the border of India, Pakistan and China. The researchers analyzed satellite images of a 2,168 square-mile area, and found that the glaciers are not losing ice, but probably gaining it. The study's results were recently published in Nature Geoscience.
For the past seven years, scientists have noted that the Karakoram glaciers have been spreading. Yet it was not clear whether the glaciers were merely becoming thinner, with the same amount of ice, or less, spread over a larger area, or if they were actually gaining mass.
To determine which, Gardelle and her team used data taken by instruments aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavor and the French SPOT5 satellite, which collected the relevant data in late 1999 and 2008, respectively. The researchers estimated that, over this time period, the glaciers gained mass. On average, the glaciers developed a new patina of ice that, if melted, would amount to just over four inches of water.
Gardelle?s team, as well as many other scientists, say they cannot yet determine why the glaciers grew. The Karakoram region has been a climatological oddity for decades. Between 1961 and 2011, weather stations there have reported increases in winter precipitation and decreases in summer temperatures. A lack of glacial meltwater has constricted the flow of one of the local rivers by 20 percent, over the same time period. Incidentally, the 46,000 ice masses that compose the glaciers of the Tibetan plateau provide water to over 1.4 billion people living in central and southern Asia.
Though scientifically?intriguing, the scientists involved in this study are wary of the political impact of these results; especially in light of the 2007 snafu involving the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change?s mistaken assertion that the Himalayan glaciers would be eradicated by 2035, and the damage to the credibility of the IPCC?s otherwise robust body of research. Unfortunately, the political volatility of manmade global warming is such that even the smallest oversight can have a significant impact on the general public's perception.
Ordinarily, we'd be dismissive if you answered that question with "Doy, make it work!" but in the special case of the Jawbone Up, it's entirely apt. The wristband promised plenty of technological advances that would track your sleep, calories burned and diarize your food intake, all within the confines of a slender cord wrapped around your wrist. The downside? A significant proportion of the units conked out days after being opened, forcing the company to offer no-questions-asked refunds and halt production. Green Acres is now a medium sized organic and all natural foods store based on Barbara?s conviction that ?food is our best medicine.? Originally the store served as an alternative to weekly grocery shopping at the large supermarket chain right across the street. But overtime Green Acres has become a shopping destination as it expanded its product mix, including specialty foods, meats, a deli and baked goods?to about 10,000 SKUs, always sticking to the store mantra of no refined sugars, pesticides, chemical preservatives, or hydrogenated oils. The vitamin and supplement business, which now includes a house brand, accounts for about one-third of revenues.
Barbara Hoffmann attributes the success of Green Acres to its basic product integrity along with its heavy emphasis on customer education and community outreach. Both Green Acres stores host regular product demos and cooking classes. In addition, the Wichita stores provides live music on weekends, hosts a farmer?s market every Saturday to highlight local produce; it also produces several large events featuring nationally known health experts, for which it has to rent space in nearby hotels to accommodate the hundreds of customers who show up. For an upcoming 18th anniversary celebration Barbara estimates they will have 1000 people come through the store?in a metropolitan community of just over 600,000!

Verizon has just announced that they're expanding their LTE network to a bunch of new areas across the U.S. In New York, the Buffalo-Niagara area has 28 new LTE towers, while Cattaraugus-Alleghany counties are getting their first taste of 4G on Thursday.

Distilling your startup idea into a single sentence can be a big challenge, but it's crucial for communicating what you're doing to the outside world.
