Teenagers without internet access at home are educationally disadvantaged, study suggests

Dec. 30, 2012 ? A major in-depth study examining how teenagers in the UK are using the internet and other mobile devices says the benefits of using such technologies far outweigh any perceived risks.

The findings are based on a large-scale study of more than 1,000 randomly selected households in the UK, coupled with regular face-to-face interviews with more than 200 teenagers and their families between 2008 and 2011.

While the study reflects a high level of parental anxiety about the potential of social networking sites to distract their offspring, and shows that some parents despair at their children's tendency to multitask on mobile devices, the research by Oxford University's Department of Education concludes that there are substantial educational advantages in teenagers being able to access the internet at home.

Teenagers who do not have access to the internet in their home have a strong sense of being 'educationally disadvantaged', warns the study. At the time of the study, the researchers estimated that around 10 per cent of the teenagers were without online connectivity at home, with most of this group living in poorer households. While recent figures from the Office of National Statistics suggest this dropped to five per cent in 2012, the researchers say that still leaves around 300,000 children without internet access in their homes.

The researchers' interviews with teenagers reveal that they felt shut out of their peer group socially and also disadvantaged in their studies as so much of the college or school work set for them to do at home required online research or preparation. One teenager, whose parents had separated, explained that he would ring his father who had internet access and any requested materials were then mailed to him through the post.

Researcher Dr Rebecca Eynon commented: 'While it's difficult to state a precise figure for teenagers without access to the internet at home, the fact remains that in the UK, there is something like 300,000 young people who do not -- and that's a significant number. Behind the statistics, our qualitative research shows that these disconnected young people are clearly missing out both educationally and socially.'

In an interview with a researcher, one 14-year old boy said: 'We get coursework now in Year 9 to see what groups we're going to go in Year 10. And people with internet, they can get higher marks because they can like research on the internet?my friends are probably on it [MSN] all the day every day. And like they talk about it in school, what happened on MSN.'

Another teenager, aged 15, commented: 'It was bell gone and I have a lot of things that I could write and I was angry that I haven't got a computer because I might finish it at home when I've got lots of time to do it. But because when I'm at school I need to do it very fast.'

Strikingly, this study contradicts claims that others have made about the potential risks of such technologies adversely affecting the ability of teenagers to concentrate on serious study. The researchers, Dr Chris Davies and Dr Rebecca Eynon, found no evidence to support this claim. Furthermore, their study concludes that the internet has opened up far more opportunities for young people to do their learning at home.

Dr Davies said: 'Parental anxiety about how teenagers might use the very technologies that they have bought their own children at considerable expense is leading some to discourage their children from becoming confident users. The evidence, based on the survey and hundreds of interviews, shows that parents have tended to focus on the negative side -- especially the distracting effects of social networking sites -- without always seeing the positive use that their children often make of being online.'

Teenagers' experiences of the social networking site Facebook appear to be mixed, says the study. Although some regarded Facebook as an integral part of their social life, others were concerned about the number of arguments that had escalated due to others wading in as a result of comments and photographs being posted.

The age of teenagers using Facebook for the first time was found to go down over the three year period from around 16 years old in 2008 to 12 or 13 years old by 2011. Interviews reveal that even the very youngest teenagers who were not particularly interested felt under some peer pressure to join. But the study also suggests that the popularity of Facebook is waning, with teenagers now exploring other forms of social networking.

Dr Davies commented: 'There is no steady state of teenage technology use -- fashions and trends are constantly shifting, and things change very rapidly when they do change.'

The research was part funded by Becta, the British Educational Communications and Technology Agency, a non-departmental public body formed under the last Labour government. The study findings are contained in a new book entitled, Teenagers and Technology, due to be published by Routledge in January 2013.

Sports Illustrated: No. 10 OSU bounces back, takes out Chicago St.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- A week after shooting as if they were blindfolded, the 10th-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes regained their touch.

Deshaun Thomas scored 17 points and four others also hit double digits as they shot 57 percent from the field in an 87-44 victory over Chicago State on Saturday.

"When we made our first shot today, I turned to the coaches and said, `Hey, we're 1 for 1. That's 1,000 percent. This is awesome,"' coach Thad Matta said, smiling. "I was pleased with how we shot the ball today."

The game was Ohio State's first since losing 74-66 to No. 6 Kansas a week earlier. In that game, the Buckeyes played good defense and worked to get open on offense but could not hit shots - even when unguarded. They mustered just 31 percent shooting from the field (20 of 65).

Against Chicago State, they hit 33 of 58 shots from the field including 8 of 17 3-pointers (47 percent).

Much of that success came after the Buckeyes had tried to shoot over a Chicago State zone. After a while, however, they decided to go inside more and drive to the basket. That strategy paid huge dividends.

"If you look at the numbers, we shot more game-like shots throughout practice and the week we had off," said point guard Aaron Craft, who ended up with 10 points - his first double-figure scoring game since November. "We're taking shooting a little more seriously."

LaQuinton Ross added 15 points, Lenzelle Smith Jr. had 13, Amedeo Della Valle had a career-high 11 for the Buckeyes (10-2), who complete an eight-game homestand when they host Nebraska in the Big Ten opener on Wednesday.

Ohio State built a 37-24 lead at the half but then completely overwhelmed the Cougars.

"They came out in the second half and they let us know, `We're the big boys.' They came and let us know, `We are a Top-10 team,"' Chicago State coach Tracy Dildy said. "The second half was all Ohio State."

Quinton Pippen, a nephew of ex-Chicago Bulls star Scottie Pippen, had 12 points for Chicago State (3-12), which fell to 0-11 away from home with its fourth straight defeat. The Cougars' regular season is half over already with one more game to play in 2012.

They don't get to go home right away, either. They play at Toledo on New Year's Eve. They also play the first two games of 2013 away, at No. 20 UNLV on Jan. 3 and then the Great West Conference opener on Jan. 12 at New Jersey Institute of Technology - capping a seven-game road trip stretching from Oregon to Texas to Nevada and then to New Jersey.

After hitting five of their last six shots from the field to end the half and build that 13-point lead, the Buckeyes opened the second half by making their first four attempts from the field. A 10-2 blitz at the outset of the second half swelled the lead to 47-26.

The Cougars never got closer than 17 points again.

Although Ohio State shot much better from the field, it had an awful day at the free throw line. The Buckeyes managed to make just 13 of 27 free throws. It got so bad there was derisive cheering whenever a player hit a foul shot in the second half.

"I'm very disappointed about it," said Smith, who was 0 for 4 at the line. "It lets me know what I've got to work on. When I step to the line I've got to be able to knock those down."

The Buckeyes will continue to work on their shooting. They also had a bad night from the field in their only other loss, a 73-68 setback at Duke in which they shot just 33 percent from the field.

In a small surprise, 6-foot-11 Amir Williams started at center ahead of the team's only senior, 6-8 Evan Ravenel.

Williams scored four points, had four rebounds, and blocked a shot in 15 minutes. Ravenel had five points, 10 rebounds and an assist in 16 minutes.

"Amir had practiced very well and, truth be told, Evan didn't practice well," Matta said. "From the standpoint of Evan being the only senior on this team, we hold him to a pretty high standard in terms of what we expect from him day in and day out. He's been in college for five years. I'll be honest I loved what he gave us off the bench today."

The game was played on a new hardwood court at Value City Arena. This one features the outline of the state of Ohio underneath the Ohio State logo at midcourt.

Thomas said he believed the Buckeyes were ready for the trials of the Big Ten.

"Yeah, I think we are," he said. "Coach is going to have us ready for the challenge."

3 Factors That Make HR Outsourcing Valuable to Businesses

by guestcontributor on December 30, 2012

The debate on whether or not HR outsourcing is more beneficial to businesses as compared to in-house HR management continues on. However, more research studies and success stories are emerging to provide valid proof that outsourcing HR functions can actually be a smart move for any business. In fact, studies have shown that internal HR management could entail hidden costs that business owners fail to take into account when making a comparison.

To help you understand the benefits of HR outsourcing to a business, there are 3 factors to consider:

1. Total Cost of Ownership ? Businesses that employ an internal HR management team are responsible for covering the cost of running that particular department within your company. The cost would cover any payroll software, human resource information system, and other related technologies or software used to perform the basic functions of a human resource staff. When you opt to outsource, there is no need to acquire any of these technologies because the outsourcing provider will be the one to supply them, along with the expert services associated with them.

2. System Upgrades ? All technologies and software are constantly evolving with new upgrades being integrated from time to time. The purpose of these system upgrades would be to ensure that the system is working efficiently and to avoid any glitches in the future. Ideally, this should be done once in every 18 months.

3. Maintenance Costs ? Investing in maintenance of system software and technologies is crucial in performing basic HR functions. While maintenance might be a huge cost for some businesses, it is a must as you could suffer from more detrimental consequences if you leave it out.

You can visit midwesthr.com to find out more details about HR outsourcing and why it is a powerful tool for any business, large or small.

Death Valley Dethrones Impostor As Hottest Place On Earth

We are mostly water. As to "Fahrenheit is a scale based what is hot an cold to humans", what the $#@$% are you talking about?
Try reading http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fahrenheit
It goes over what how and why Fahrenheit set his temperature scale the way he did, and you know what, the human feelings had nothing to do with it, though the temperature of human blood was used for part of it. I find that kind of creepy, but a lot of people were obsessed about that kind of stuff in the early 1700s.

So again, Fahrenheit isn't based on what a human might think is hot or cold, it's based on some arbitrary points and scaling by it's creator. For that matter, so is the Celsius scale, but in a lesser extent because it based the whole thing on a consistent set of arbitrary stuff. (The Freezing and boiling of water broken into 100 degrees.)

(AP) ? Venezuela's vice president arrived in Havana on Saturday in a sudden and unexpected trip to visit President Hugo Chavez as he recovers from cancer surgery.

Communist Party newspaper Granma published online a photo of a smiling Vice President Nicolas Maduro being greeted at the airport in the Cuban capital by the island's foreign minister, Bruno Rodriguez.

"From there, (Maduro) went directly to the hospital where President Hugo Chavez Frias is receiving treatment to greet his family members and Venezuelan Science and Technology Minister Jorge Arreaza Monserrat, and to discuss with doctors the adequate moment to visit the President the same day," the paper said.

Granma added that Maduro was accompanied by Venezuelan Attorney General Cilia Flores.

The previous night in Caracas, Venezuela, Maduro did not specify how long he would be away but said Energy Minister Hector Navarro would be in charge of government affairs in the meantime. Maduro's announcement came at the end of a long speech at the inauguration of a state governor, and he offered no information on the purpose of his visit beyond seeing Chavez.

In a speech Saturday, Venezuela's National Assembly President Diosdado Cabello said only that Maduro went to Cuba to visit with Chavez and urge him "to follow his treatment." Venezuelan press officials in Caracas said they had no additional information Saturday.

Maduro's trip comes amid growing uncertainty about Chavez's health.

The Venezuelan leader has not been seen or heard from since undergoing his fourth cancer-related surgery Dec. 11, and government officials have said he might not return in time for his scheduled Jan. 10 inauguration for a new six-year term. There have been no updates on Chavez's condition since Maduro announced Monday night that he had received a phone call from the president who was up and walking.

Venezuela's opposition criticized Maduro for what they said was a lack of transparency surrounding Chavez's health.

"What I still don't understand is who is president," Lawmaker Alfonso Marquina said. "Who is governing the country now? As for the purpose of this sudden and improvised trip, only the national government knows."

Maduro is the highest ranking Venezuelan official to visit Chavez since the surgery. Bolivian President Evo Morales traveled to Cuba last weekend in a quick trip that only added to the uncertainty surrounding Chavez's condition. Morales has not commented publicly on his visit or even confirmed that he saw Chavez while he was there.

Before leaving for Cuba, Chavez acknowledged the precariousness of his situation and designated Maduro as his successor, telling supporters they should vote for the vice president if a new presidential election was necessary. Although Chavez has delegated some administrative powers to Maduro, he did not leave the vice president officially in charge of the presidency.

Venezuela's Democratic Unity bloc of opposition parties suggested Saturday it was time for the government to declare the president temporarily absent from power.

"They are trying to hide what every day is a fact: The government does not want to recognize that there is a temporary absence of the president from his duties," the bloc said in a statement.

On Friday morning, Maduro read a New Year message from Chavez to Venezuelan troops, though it was unclear when the president composed it.

"I have had to battle again for my health," Chavez said in the message. He expressed "complete faith in the commitment and loyalty that the revolutionary armed forces are showing me in this very complicated and difficult moment."

A group of opposition candidates demanded Friday that Maduro provide an official medical report on Chavez's health. Lawmaker Dinorah Figuera said the country needs "a medical report from those who are responsible for the diagnosis, evaluation and treatment of the president."

"The Venezuelan people deserve official and institutional information," Figuera told Venezuelan media.

A legal fight is brewing over what should happen if Chavez, who was re-elected in October, cannot return in time for the inauguration before the National Assembly.

National Assembly Diosdado Cabello insisted Monday that Venezuela's constitution allows the president to take the oath before the Supreme Court at any time if he cannot do it before the legislature on Jan. 10.

Opposition leaders argue the constitution requires that new elections be held within 30 days if Chavez cannot take office Jan. 10. They have criticized the confusion over the inauguration as the latest example of the Chavez government's disdain for democratic rule of law and have demanded clarity on whether the president is fit to govern.

NASA'S Space Launch System core stage passes major milestone, ready to start construction

Dec. 28, 2012 ? The team designing America's new flagship rocket has completed successfully a major technical review of the vehicle's core stage. NASA's Space Launch System (SLS) will take the agency's Orion spacecraft and other payloads beyond low-Earth orbit, providing a new capability for human exploration.

The core stage preliminary design review (PDR) was held Thursday (Dec. 20) at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., and included representatives from the agency and The Boeing Co. Boeing's Exploration Launch Systems in Huntsville is the prime contractor for the core stage and its avionics. Marshall manages the SLS Program.

"Passing a preliminary design review within 12 months of bringing Boeing on contract shows we are on track toward meeting a 2017 launch date," said Tony Lavoie, manager of the SLS Stages Element at Marshall. "We can now allow those time-critical areas of design to move forward with initial fabrication and proceed toward the final design phase -- culminating in a critical design review in 2014 -- with confidence."

The first flight test of the SLS, which will feature a configuration for a 70-metric ton lift capacity and carry an uncrewed Orion spacecraft beyond the moon, is scheduled for 2017. As the SLS evolves, a two-stage launch vehicle using the core stage will provide a lift capability of 130-metric tons to enable missions beyond low-Earth orbit and to support deep space exploration.

The purpose of the PDR was to ensure the design met system requirements within acceptable risk and fell within schedule and budget constraints. An important part of the PDR was to prove the core stage could integrate safely with other elements of the rocket's main engines and solid rocket boosters, the crew capsule and the launch facilities at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Core stage designers provided an in-depth assessment to a board of engineers composed of propulsion and design experts from across the agency and the aerospace industry.

"Each individual element of this program has to be at the same level of maturity before we can move the program as a whole to the next step," SLS Program Manager Todd May said. "The core stage is the rocket's central propulsion element and will be an optimized blend of new and existing hardware design. We're building it with longer tanks, longer feed lines and advanced manufacturing processes. We are running ahead of schedule and will leverage that schedule margin to ensure a safe and affordable rocket for our first flight in 2017."

The core stage will be built at NASA's Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans using state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment. The plant continues modifying its facilities and ordering materials for construction of the rocket. Michoud has built components for NASA's spacecraft for decades, most recently, the space shuttle's external tanks.

German finance minister says worst of euro debt crisis over

First Published Dec 27 2012 09:44 am ? Last Updated Dec 27 2012 09:44 am

Berlin ? Germany?s finance minister says the worst of euro area?s debt crisis appears to be over after three years of worries over Greece and other members of the group of 17 European Union countries that use the single currency.

Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble was quoted Thursday as telling the Bild newspaper: "I think we have the worst behind us."

Schaeuble says Greece and others have recognized that they can only overcome the crisis by implementing reforms and that the Greek government ? which has received two bailouts ? "knows that it cannot financially overburden the other euro states".

Some in Germany have expressed concern about the economy of neighboring France. But Schaeuble says the government there "knows very well that every country must constantly conduct reforms to remain competitive."

(AP) ? Peyton Manning and Adrian Peterson want to cap their sensational comebacks with Super Bowl appearances. For now, they can be proud of Pro Bowl spots.

So can Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III, one of two rookies chosen Wednesday for the Jan. 27 NFL all-star game.

Manning missed all of the 2011 season with neck and back problems that required several operations. He then signed with Denver as a free agent and has led the Broncos on a 10-game winning streak to take the AFC West.

"I know there's great players out there in the NFL, but there's some great players on this team this year that deserve to go," said Manning, whose 12th Pro Bowl is a record for quarterbacks. He ranks fourth in league passing this year, has thrown 34 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

Four other Broncos made the AFC roster: DE Elvis Dumervil, linebacker Von Miller, CB Champ Bailey and tackle Ryan Clady. Bailey's 12th appearance is a record for defensive backs.

"My goal has always been to go out and help the team win and play at a high level," Manning added. "Anything that comes along with that, like being honored as a Pro Bowl selection, is very humbling."

Minnesota's Peterson tore up his left knee on Christmas Eve last year, underwent major surgery, then was back for the season opener. He's gone from uncertain to unstoppable, running away with the rushing title with a career-high 1,898 yards and lifting the Vikings toward an NFC wild card.

"Coming into the season after going through the rehab process, I just told myself that I wanted to lead my team to a championship and make sure that I contribute and do my part," Peterson said. "I've been doing it."

Griffin is one of three rookie QBs who had superb debut seasons, along with Andrew Luck of Indianapolis and Russell Wilson of Seattle. Luck and Wilson weren't voted to the Pro Bowl by players, coaches and fans, although their teams are in the playoffs; Griffin can get to the postseason if Washington beats Dallas on Sunday.

"You can't play down those kind of things," Griffin said. "I've always said my whole football career that you don't play for awards. They just come. You don't say you're going to win the Heisman. You don't say you're going to win MVP. You go out and you prove it on the field, and if everyone feels that way then they'll give you that award."

San Francisco had the most players selected, nine, including six from its second-ranked defense. Houston was next with eight, six on offense.

Kansas City, despite its 2-13 record that is tied with Jacksonville for worst in the league, had five Pro Bowlers, including RB Jamaal Charles, who like Peterson is coming back from a torn ACL.

One other rookie, Minnesota kicker Blair Walsh, was chosen. Walsh has nine field goals of at least 50 yards, an NFL mark.

The AFC kicker is at the other end of the spectrum: Cleveland's Phil Dawson earned his first selection in his 14th NFL season.

Another record setter will be heading to Honolulu: Detroit WR Calvin Johnson.

Johnson broke Jerry Rice's single-season yards receiving record and has 1,892 yards with a game left.

Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez set the record for Pro Bowls at his position by being chosen for the 13th time.

The league's top two sackmasters, DEs Aldon Smith of San Francisco and J.J. Watt of Houston, were first-time selections. Watt has 20 1-2 sacks, one ahead of Smith; the NFL record is 22 1-2.

Other newcomers, along with Griffin, Walsh and Dawson, were AFC players tackle Duane Brown and guard Wade Smith of Houston; safety LaRon Landry of the Jets; kick returner Jacoby Jones of Baltimore; and punter Dustin Colquitt of Kansas City.

For the NFC, first-timers were Giants WR Victor Cruz; Atlanta WR Julio Jones; Seattle tackle Russell Okung and center Max Unger; San Francisco guard Mike Iupati, linebacker NaVorro Bowman and safety Donte Whitner; Chicago cornerback Tim Jennings and defensive tackle Henry Melton; Washington tackle Trent Williams and special teamer Lorenzo Alexander; Minnesota fullback Jerome Felton; Tampa Bay DT Gerald McCoy; and New Orleans punter Thomas Morstead.

Eight teams had no Pro Bowl players: Carolina, Philadelphia and St. Louis in the NFC, Tennessee, Buffalo, Jacksonville, San Diego and Oakland in the AFC.

Kansas City art in 2012: Sights to remember - KansasCity.com

More than 50,000 people attended the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art?s ?Decorative Arts at the World?s Fairs? exhibit, featuring stellar objects drawn from almost a century?s worth of world?s fairs.

At the Kemper Museum, the most talked about event in 2012 was not the Lois Dodd show or the ongoing ?Map as Art? exhibit of intricate and arresting works. Instead it was the decision to cut staff for financial reasons and the departure of longtime director Rachael Blackburn Cozad. The Nerman Museum kicked off the year with a thought-provoking exhibit of new work by Rashawn Griffin, who grew up in Olathe and gained the national spotlight following his inclusion in the Studio Museum in Harlem?s 2005-06 ?Frequency? show of new black art. It ended it with ?Oppenheimer Collection @ 20,? a summation of Tony and Marti Oppenheimer?s commitment to providing the institution with a steady stream of contemporary acquisitions. For topicality and intelligence, it didn?t get better than Raechell Smith?s ?On Watch? exhibit at Block Artspace, presenting a global roster of artists whose works addressed the theme of surveillance in contemporary society. Smith amped it up with an outdoor Project Wall that raised the controversial issue of U.S. drones. The Johnson County Museum made a pitch-perfect selection with ?Bill Owens: Suburbia,? a relevant exhibit of culturally revealing photographs exploring the American Dream. Kansas City public art administrator Porter Arneill presided over one of the year?s most ambitious projects: Janet Zweig?s ?Prairie Logic,? a full-size boxcar installed in a setting of prairie grasses on the roof of a downtown city garage. But Kansas City artist Jarrett Mellenbruch?s ?Float? installation, of functional hammocks installed in the green space by the Bartle Hall ballroom, proved every bit as engaging during its summer run as part of the 2012 Avenue of the Arts. The year?s big disappointment was ?Visions of Mexican Art? at Union Station. Conceived to introduce viewers to important Mexican art movements in the last century, the exhibit was undermined by a crowded, noisy installation next to the clackety model trains. And the featured works were presented without enough information to allow viewers to make a meaningful connection. Several of the year?s most interesting developments centered on individual artworks. In March, it was revealed that the Nelson?s Degas pastel of a dancer, for years part of the impressionist collection of Marion and Henry Bloch, had been the subject of an FBI search following its 1992 disappearance from the private collection of copper heiress Huguette Clark in New York. Over the summer, the Nelson embarked on the tedious restoration of its Gustave Courbet painting, ?Portrait of Jo,? which had suffered a serious tear in the 1920s and had been subjected to an overzealous treatment in the 1940s. Conservator Mary Schafer is spending nine months working to return the painting to its original beauty, and ?Portrait of Jo? will return to public view this spring. The Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas definitively established that a Renaissance painting titled ?Christ Carrying the Cross,? which had been part of the museum?s collection since 1953, was the work of artist Giorgio Vasari. It celebrated the attribution by devoting an entire exhibition to the painting and works that influenced it.The 2012 exhibition season was marked by several small shows with big impact and a couple of experiments that threw aesthetics to the winds. For three weeks last summer, the Spencer exhibited a wondrous array of Turkish kilims assembled by art collector Harrison Jedel and artist Dale Eldred during their travels to Turkey in the 1960s and ?70s. A casual mode of display ? the rugs were strewn across the floor and draped over pedestals ? heightened the impact of their vibrant colors and patterns. A loan from a private collection made for a similarly engaging one-gallery show at the Nelson, where a 4-foot-tall ?Egg? (2010) composed of stainless steel cooking wares hung from the ceiling in a small gallery in the East Asian department. (It was recently moved to the postmodern galleries in the Bloch Building.) The artwork, by leading Indian artist Subodh Gupta, belongs to Kansas City collectors Bill and Christy Gautreaux. The Nelson?s Chinese painting galleries racked up a winner with ?Faces From China?s Past: Paintings for Entertainment & Remembrance,? an exhibit of charming portraits of everyday people by mostly unknown artists, while the photography department?s Timothy O?Sullivan exhibit offered fascinating new insights into the nation?s westward expansion. The Nelson and the Spencer ventured into uncharted territory with exhibits designed to engage audiences in new ways. The Spencer?s ?Prepared: Strategies for Activists,? a no-holds-barred exhibit of posters, placards and protest paraphernalia spearheaded by Chinese artist Chen Shaoxiong, resonated with the U.S. Occupy movement. At the Nelson, ?The Magnificent Collection of Gilbert B. Hargrove? is a cabinet of curiosities featuring objects and oddities drawn from museum storage and private holdings. The exhibit grew out of a story by Fringe Festival producer/director Tara Varney, about a fictional 19th-century adventurer who traveled the world collecting things that he donated to the Nelson. The Hargrove show was conceived in a bid to attract 20- to 40-year-olds to the museum. If its paintings on clam shells and bear claw necklaces don?t work, a provocative contemporary show might be the best recourse. In all, the past year was not the liveliest at Kansas City?s museums and exhibition spaces. We could use a heady dose of the new and unpredictable. Maybe the Chiefs Art Program could get us that big Jonathan Borofsky sculpture, proposed but voted down, for the renovated Union Station. It would be a start.

(AP) ? Egypt's president says the disputed constitution just approved in a referendum establishes a new republic and calls on the opposition to join a dialogue to heal rifts and shift the focus to repairing the economy.

Mohammed Morsi said Wednesday he acknowledges the "respectable" proportion that voted against the constitution drafted by his Islamist allies, but offered no concrete gestures to an opposition that has so far rejected his dialogue and vowed to fight the charter. Critics say the charter restricts freedoms and enshrines Islamic rule.

Morsi said he moved swiftly to put the constitution to a referendum to end instability and open the road for development. The opposition had urged him to postpone the vote.

5 Christmas videos of cats, dogs and kids guaranteed to make you ...

Nothing can lift spirits better than a glass of spiked eggnog ? or a funny YouTube video. In honor of the holiday season, I?ve rounded up a few favorites featuring pets.

?

Dog receives 210 bottles for Christmas

Some dogs prefer a good Nylabone. Others go batty for a Kong filled with peanut butter. The pooch in this video quickly learns that 210 empty water bottles serve as a wacky, wild and wonderful way to say, ?Merry Christmas.? Don?t miss his head shake at the end. Special thanks to Dog Whisperer Cesar Millan for sharing this sweet video on Facebook.

?

Santa Claws

Four years ago, animator Simon Tofield introduced a frisky feline to the world in a video clip called ?Cat Man Do.? 38 million downloads later, those simple line drawings of a cat have spawned a mini empire that includes books, games and a line of ceramic cat bowls. Tofield?s holiday video playfully captures all the reasons that cats should be kept far from the Christmas tree. (And don't miss these?25?real cats in, on and under Christmas trees.)

?

Papa finally gets a puppy

Jess Santana?s grandfather finally gets the Christmas gift he has always wanted ? an adorably wrinkly English bulldog puppy. Try not to get misty-eyed as he reaches for the new addition. For those who plan to adopt a pet this holiday season, check out items you really need to start things off on the right foot.

?

Cats discover Christmas tree, but no gifts

There?s nothing like that moment when a child ? or a pet ? first lays eyes on the Christmas tree. But Casey and Sassy can barely contain their disdain after learning that they have to wait until Dec. 25 for their presents. ??

?

We?re getting a dog!

I cannot decide which part of this video is my favorite. Perhaps it?s when the youngest child grimaces after opening her gift and finding a dog brush. I also love when the kids squeal after meeting their newly adopted dog, which causes the dog to run in the other direction. Fortunately, the kids and Daisy lived happily ever after. Here are tips to help kids and pets peacefully coexist long after you put away the tree and the tinsel.

?

Have a lovely holiday.

Conventional video projectors have remained largely a niche market for dedicated home theater enthusiasts on account of their difficult installation. However, a new breed of "home projector" has developed over the past few years into an increasingly viable alternative to flat panel televisions. And if LG's new 100-inch class LG "HECTO" Laser TV is any indicator, the LED/Plasma debate may be moot. More »

Officials: NY gunman led quiet life before killing 2 firefighters

WEBSTER, N.Y. - A man who set his house on fire then lured firefighters to their deaths in a blaze of flames and bullets had attracted little attention since he got out of prison in the 1990s for killing his grandmother, authorities said.

But two months ago, William Spengler's mother died, leaving the 62-year-old ex-con in a Lake Ontario house with his sister, who he "couldn't stand," a friend said.

Spengler set a car and a house in his neighbourhood ablaze early Monday, luring firefighters to the neighbourhood and then killed two, wounded two others and injured a police officer while several homes burned around him, police said. Spengler then killed himself. His sister, Cheryl, was missing.

About 100 people attended an impromptu memorial vigil Monday evening in Webster, a suburb of Rochester. Dozens of bouquets were left at the fire station, along with a handwritten sign that said, "Thanks for protecting us. RIP."

Spengler, had been living in the home in Webster, a suburb of Rochester, with his mother and sister since his parole in 1998. He had served 17 years in prison after the beating death of his 92-year-old grandmother in 1980, for which he had originally been charged with murder but pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of manslaughter. His mother, Arline, died in October.

On Monday, Spengler fired at the four firefighters when they arrived shortly after 5:30 a.m. at the blaze, town police Chief Gerald Pickering said. The first police officer who arrived chased the gunman and exchanged shots.

Spengler lay in wait outdoors for the firefighters' arrival, then opened fire probably with a rifle and from atop an earthen berm, Pickering said. "It does appear it was a trap," he said.

Authorities used an armoured vehicle to help residents flee dozens of homes on the shore of Lake Ontario a day before Christmas. Police restricted access to the neighbourhood, and officials said it was unclear whether there were other bodies in the seven houses left to burn.

Authorities said Spengler hadn't done anything to bring himself to their attention since his parole. As a convicted felon, he wasn't allowed to possess weapons. Monroe County District Attorney Sandra Doorley said Spengler led a very quiet life after he got out of prison.

A friend said Spengler hated his sister. Roger Vercruysse lived next door to Spengler and recalled a man who doted on his mother, whose obituary suggested contributions to the West Webster Fire Department.

"He loved his mama to death," said Vercruysse, who last saw his friend about six months ago.

Vercruysse also said Spengler "couldn't stand his sister" and "stayed on one side of the house and she stayed on the other."

The West Webster Fire District learned of the fire early Monday after a report of a car and house on fire on Lake Road, on a narrow peninsula where Irondequoit Bay meets Lake Ontario, Monroe County Sheriff Patrick O'Flynn said.

The fire appeared from a distance as a pulsating ball of flame glowing against the early morning sky, flames licking into treetops and reflecting on the water, with huge bursts of smoke billowing away in a brisk wind.

Emergency radio communications capture someone saying he "could see the muzzle flash coming at me" as Spengler carried out his ambush. The audio posted on the website RadioReference.com has someone reporting "firefighters are down" and saying "got to be rifle or shotgun - high powered ... semi or fully auto."

Two of the firefighters arrived on a fire engine and two in their own vehicles, Pickering said. After Spengler fired, one of the wounded men fled, but the other three couldn't because of flying gunfire.

The police officer who exchanged gunfire with Spengler "in all likelihood saved many lives," Pickering said.

A police armoured vehicle was used to recover two men, and eventually it removed 33 people from nearby homes, the police chief said. The gunfire initially kept firefighters from battling the blazes.

The dead men were identified as police Lt. Michael Chiapperini, 43, the Webster Police Department's public information officer; and 19-year-old Tomasz Kaczowka, also a 911 dispatcher.

Pickering described Chiapperini as a "lifetime firefighter" with nearly 20 years in the department, and he called Kaczowka a "tremendous young man."

Kaczowka's brother, reached at the family home Monday night, said he didn't want to talk.

The two wounded firefighters, Joseph Hofstetter and Theodore Scardino, remained in guarded condition Tuesday at Strong Memorial Hospital, authorities said. Both were awake and alert and are expected to recover.

Hofstetter, also a full-timer with the Rochester Fire Department, was hit once in the pelvis, and the bullet lodged in his spine, authorities said. Scardino was hit in the chest and knee.

At West Webster Fire Station 1, there were at least 20 bouquets on a bench in front and a bouquet of roses with three gold-and-white ribbons saying, "May they rest in peace," ''In the line of duty" and "In memory of our fallen brothers."

A handwritten sign says, "Thanks for protecting us, RIP." Two candles were lit to honour the dead.

Grieving firefighters declined to talk to reporters. At an impromptu memorial vigil Monday evening, about 100 people stood in the cold night air, some holding candles. A fire department spokesman made a brief appearance, thanked them all and told them to go home and appreciate their families.

Cathy Bartlett was there with her teenage son, who was good friends with Kaczowka. Bartlett's husband, Mark Bartlett, has been a firefighter there for 25 years but missed the call this morning.

"Thank God my husband slept through the first alarm and didn't get up until the second one went off," she said.

The shooting and fires were in a neighbourhood of seasonal and year-round homes set close together across the road from the lakeshore. The area is popular with recreational boaters but is normally quiet this time of year.

"We have very few calls for service in that location," Pickering said. "Webster is a tremendous community. We are a safe community, and to have a tragedy befall us like this is just horrendous."

O'Flynn lamented the violence, which comes on the heels of other shootings including the massacre of 20 students and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

"It's sad to see that this is becoming more commonplace in communities across the nation," O'Flynn said.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the State Police and Office of Emergency Management were working with local authorities.

"Volunteer firefighters and police officers were injured and two were taken from us as they once again answered the call of duty," Cuomo said in a statement. "We as the community of New York mourn their loss as now two more families must spend the holidays without their loved ones."

Webster, a middle-class suburb, now is the scene of violence linked to house fires for two Decembers in a row.

Last Dec. 7, authorities say, a 15-year-old boy doused his home with gasoline and set it ablaze, killing his father and two brothers, 16 and 12. His mother and 13-year-old sister escaped with injuries. He is being prosecuted as an adult.
